The gastroenterologist begins the visit with a detailed interview. They ask about the type of complaints, how long they have lasted, their relationship with meals, bowel rhythm, the nature of the stool, the presence of pain, bloating, nausea, heartburn, weight loss or bleeding. Information about the medications taken, chronic diseases, previous tests, past procedures and diet is also important.
If the symptoms concern the abdominal cavity, the doctor may perform an abdominal examination, assessing tenderness, tension of the abdominal wall and the location of the complaints. On this basis, they decide whether further diagnostics are needed.
